Propagation constant, attenuation constant, phase constant

Propagation constant γ describes variation of amplitude and variation of phase of a wave in the longitudinal direction in a waveguide. Propagation constant is given by the relation

γ=β+jα.

Here, β is attenuation constant and α is phase constant). Attenuation constant describes the amplitude decrease on the trajectory 1 meter long; the amplitude decreases to exp(-β) - multiple of its initial value. Phase constant describes the phase variation on the trajectory 1 meter long in the direction of wave.
