UWB measurement in Time domain

M2. UWB measurement in time domain (March 2014). This measurement could be carried out thanks to the generous support from Tektronix represented by the company Testovací Technika s.r.o. which lend us Arbitrary Waveform Generator AWG70002A (for generation of short UWB pulses).

The channel impulse responses were directly measured in time domain. The sinusoidal modulated Gaussian pulse having band of 3–10 GHz generated through an arbitrary waveform generator Tektronix AWG70002A was amplified through a power amplifier and radiated by a wideband vertically-polarized conical monopole antenna. At the receiver side, an identical antenna was used. Then, the received signal was amplified through a low noise amplifier and stored in a digital & mixed signal oscilloscope Tektronix DPO72004C. Figure 1 depicts the interconnections of the apparatus of the measurement setup. The measurement was carried out in the Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI car. In order to avoid a degradation of the measured phase accuracy due to movements of the antennas, phase-stable coaxial cables were used.

The RX antenna was placed at various locations inside the car (on all seats and in the boot) and the TX antenna was placed on the left and right side of the dashboard, top corners of the windshield and at the rear part of the ceiling, see Figure 2. The channel measurements were carried out for both LOS and NLOS scenarios. NLOS was caused by the backrest of the seats, the dashboard, and/or persons sitting inside the vehicle. There were measured altogether 52 different TX-RX positions. For details of antenna placement please refer to [1], [2].
