MMW antennas

0

For the measurement of the intra-vehicle signal propagation in MMW band we utilized two different MMW antennas.

Open-ended waveguide antenna

It is a simple antenna represented by an open waveguide flange (WR-15), see Figure 1. Its properties are depicted in Figure 2 and Figure 3. The advantage of this antenna is simplicity, a good impedance matching, and relatively flat main lobe of the radiation pattern.

Slot antenna array

For the measurement of the intra-vehicle signal propagation in frequency band 55–65 GHz, we have developed an antenna (Figure 4) with a dipole-like radiation pattern. Compared with the open-ended waveguide antenna, this antenna could cover a larger number of reflected waves in the car compartment. The antennas consist of a group of three longitudinal slots placed in both broad walls of a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). An SIW slot antenna is naturally a narrow-band structure; however, using different self-resonant frequencies of the slots in the group ensures operating in the desired frequency band. The parameters are summarized in Figure 5 and Figure 6. For details please refer to [1].
